Public Radio Exchange in New York Times

In a front page feature in today’s New York Times arts section, reporter Elizabeth Jensen took a look at the next generation of public radio shows poised to fill the void left by Car Talk when it stops producing news shows at the end of 2011. Jake Shapiro, executive director, of Public Radio Exchange (PRX), was featured prominently in the article, discussing PRX’s successful new public radio series including The Moth Radio Hour and Snap Judgment.

Atlantic Avenue�s Sidewalk Extravaganza

The first-ever Atlantic Avenue Extravaganza presented by PKPR client, Atlantic Avenue Business Improvement District, was a resounding success. Celebrating the launch of the BID, a coalition of three hundred businesses along one of Brooklyn’s most famous boulevards hit the streets, literally bringing their business outside!

A jam-packed lineup of special events, performances, demonstrations, tastings, tours, games, and more brought Atlantic Avenue’s celebrated commerce, culture, and community to life.

From the White House to Lowdown Hudson Blues

Blues legend Buddy Guy, fresh from jamming with President Obama at an all-star concert at the White House last month, will join celebrated chanteuse Neko Case to headline a free two-day blues music festival in Lower Manhattan on July 11th and 12th at the World Financial Center Plaza.

To announce the show, PKPR secured an exclusive in The New York Times, a segment on NY1 featuring Buddy Guy performing with President Obama, and coverage in BrooklynVegan. Time Out New York named its one of the top Blues/Jazz/World Music concerts of the summer and it was highlighted in both The New York Times and New York Post’s summer previews.

Internet Week Coverage Spreads Like a Viral Video

Celebrating its 5th year, Internet Week New York 2012 resulted in more coverage in a wider variety of outlets than ever before, solidifying its role as a leader in the New York City tech boom.

For the week-long festival, PKPR secured over 250 articles and credentialed nearly 300 journalists to cover this year’s festival, representing a 60% increase in both metrics over 2011.

In-depth coverage of the festival, which consisted of over 200 events, exhibits, panels, and parties across the city, included New York Daily News, Adweek, Forbes.com, AFP, and New York Observer’s BetaBeat.

Additionally, PKPR secured 30 broadcast segments including New York 1 News, New York Daily News video, NBC New York Nightly News, and Voice of America.

Mayor Bloomberg, Internet Week Unveil NY Tech Map

PKPR worked with the NYC Mayor’s Office on coordinating a major press conference on May 15th at Internet Week New York Headquarters where Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Chief Digital Officer Rachel Sterne, and Internet Week New York Chairman David-Michel Davies unveiled the Made in NY Digital Jobs Map, an interactive guide to the City’s startups, investors, incubators, and coworking spaces, including over 325 digital companies that are currently hiring for thousands of jobs.

Created by Internet Week New York in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the Made in NY Digital Map already plots more than 500 digital companies across the five boroughs. The map offers direct links to the companies’ jobs listings pages and pinpoints the city’s hottest tech hubs, from the Flatiron District to DUMBO.

Over 30 media outlets attended the press conference, resulting in coverage in the New York Times, New York Post, Fast Company, TechCrunch, Mashable, Huffington Post, The Next Web, Crain’s New York Business, BetaBeat, VentureBeat, NY1, WABC, Portfolio, DNAinfo, and The Epoch Times.

Time Inc. Hosts 2nd Annual 10 NYC Startups to Watch

For the second year in a row, PKPR managed publicity for Time Inc’s 10 NYC Startups To Watch, which has quickly become one of the flagship annual events of Internet Week New York. TechCrunch called it a “pretty badass party” and New York Observer’s BetaBeat named it one one of the “ten must-see events of Internet Week.” 

More than 50 journalists attended the event, filing on-the-scene stories featuring interviews with founders of Codecademy, Artsy, Fab, Stamped, and the other honored startups. Highlights of the coverage included a TechCrunch TV segment, in depth stories in Adweek, Fox Business, WNET’s MetroFocus, and Portfolio, and a slideshow on PCMag.com profiling each of the startups.

Knight Funds New Video Translation Service

Aiming to strengthen the role of the Internet as an open platform for global learning, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Mozilla this provided $1 million in funding to Amara, a pioneer in crowd-sourced video translation.

With nearly 170,000 videos translated since its founding in 2010, Amara is one of the world’s largest video subtitling platforms. Its system is used by a wide range of leading news, media and education organizations, from PBS NewsHour to Khan Academy and Al Jazeera, to reach wider audiences and further global understanding. In addition, Amara volunteers use the system to independently translate popular videos – from President Barack Obama’s message to the Sudan to KONY 2012, which was translated into 35 languages in 4 days.

The Knight Foundation tapped PKPR to handle outreach for this announcement to technology media. Coverage of the announcement included TechCrunch, The Next Web, Pando Daily, BoingBoing, Portfolio, Xconomy, Crowdsourcing, Nieman MediaLab, and more.

Scorsese Honored at 2012 Moth Ball

On May 8th, The Moth presented Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese with the 2012 Moth Award at its annual Moth Ball at Capitale in New York City. The honor was the centerpiece of a star-studded evening celebrating fifteen years of The Moth. Scorsese wowed the crowd with the story of a school field trip he took in 1951to the Old Bowery Saving Bank, now The Capitale, where the kids were allowed to touch $1,000 bills.

Incubator for Health & Wellness Startups Launches

WellTech, a new health and wellness-focused incubator, launched this week with a duo of startups dedicated to changing how consumers pursue wellness and healthy living, FITiST and Wizpert.

Headquartered in New York’s Gramercy neighborhood, WellTech targets startups and companies using technology to create new, consumer-facing health and wellness solutions. WellTech will provide startups with strategic guidance, such as industry expertise and networking, office space, mentoring and marketing support. Participants will receive a minimum $50,000 in capital to help them grow their business and also will have potential access to future rounds of capital from WellTech and other introduced investors.

Public Media Accelerator in Mashable

PKPR is thrilled to be working with Public Radio Exchange (PRX) on developing the media strategy for the Public Media Accelerator, a $2.5 million tech incubator that aims to do for public broadcasting what accelerators like Code for America and RockHealth are doing for government and health care, respectively.

In advance of a series of events at SXSW Interactive, PKPR placed an exclusive with Mashable announcing that PRX hired Corey Ford, director of Innovation Endeavors’ Runway program, the start-up incubator at Eric Schmidt’s early stage venture capital firm, and former producer for the Emmy Award-winning PBS series FRONTLINE, has been tapped as the Public Media Accelerator’s director. Ford will oversee the program which will invest in mission-driven entrepreneurs from media, technology, and design to build ventures with the potential to reshape the future of public media.

The Moth Receives MacArthur Grant
