Sheryl Oring is an artist and writer whose work explores issues related to the First Amendment as well as language and memory. Her book “I Wish to Say (The Birthday Project)” featuring birthday greetings to President Bush and photographic portraits of the people who sent them, was published in Sprin 2008 by Quack!Media. She is currently touring the country collecting messages for the next president.
Oring initiated the “I Wish to Say” project in 2004 as a commissioned artwork for the First Amendment Project (http://www.thefirstamendment.org/) in Oakland, Calif. Peter Jennings named her “Person of the Week” on ABC’s “World News Tonight” for her work on the project during the Republican National Convention in New York in 2004.
Crisscrossing the country just like Obama, Clinton, and McCain, artist Sheryl Oring is gathering messages for the next president the old-fashioned way: people sit down at her mobile desk, dictate their missives, and she manually types them using a vintage typewriter. The letters will be presented to 44th president of the United States in January 2009.
As Sheryl tours the country, PKPR is raising awareness of the project by securing local, national, and international coverage - from the Los Angeles Times to the New York Daily News to Yahoo! Espana and Huffington Post.
But we were most excited about NPR’s coverage.
PKPR worked closely with NPR’s Bryant Park Project to develop an entire program around Sheryl’s New York City appearance that included NPR listeners submitting their own messages to the next president. Sheryl typed several of them and NPR posted them online, as well as a wonderful video segment that really captures what this special project is all about.

Celebrating the Big Apple’s thriving digital media industry and community, an unprecedented coalition of business, media, entertainment, government, and arts leaders are presenting more than 50 events that will bring the Internet to life on the city’s streets this June 3 – 10.
We couldn’t have written a better headline for Fortune’s wrap-up piece on the Internet Week New York 2009.
PKPR once again handled publicity for the weeklong festival celebrating New York’s Internet industry. An estimated 15,000 people, including such industry movers and shakers as Al Gore, Barry Diller, Rupert Murdoch, Martha Stewart, and Twitter co-founders Jack Dorsey and Biz Stone, attended over 110 conferences, panels, exhibits, screenings, and networking events hosted by the likes of YouTube, Microsoft, Digg, Time Warner, Mediabistro, Digitas, and College Humor. Highlights ranged from NY Tech Meetup Showcase to the first-ever Webutant Ball.
More than 100 reporters and bloggers were credentialed to cover Internet Week. Coverage included Wall Street Journal, CNN.com, New York Post, New York Observer, All Things D, Crain’s New York Business, CNET, and Huffington Post.

PKPR helped kick-off the first-ever Internet Week New York with a blast of coverage this week including a full-page Daily News story on how the Internet has changed New York, New York Post, Metro, Time Out New York, Hollywood Reporter, and CNET. In all, PKPR has credentialed more than 70 media outlets and bloggers to cover the more than 80 events happening throughout the week.
Our favorite event: the official launch at Gracie Mansion where Mayor Bloomberg welcomed the City’s digital media leaders and pondered whether his buddies on Facebook were true friends. The New York Times chimes in here. And check out this great New York 1 segment, which also features PKPR client and Internet Week event partner Arts Engine.

To launch My Wall Street Journal, a limited-edition parody, PKPR developed a multi-tiered PR campaign that combined stunts, a viral video, and major media placements.
Prior to the newsstand launch, PKPR conceived and distributed a phony hidden-camera video of Rupert Murdoch ranting about My Wall Street Journal. The video touched off a round of pre-launch buzz online, which grew to a peak with exclusive launch-day stories in the NY Times and the Huffington Post.
We also placed the editors on Imus, CNBC, and MSNBC, and hired an Ann Coulter lookalike to promote the newspaper in front of Fox News, which earned coverage in outlets from AM New York to the Boston Globe to Mediabistro.
The numbers: the HuffPo story was one of it’s most widely-read stories for a full week; the video is near 85,000 views; and “My WSJ” got as high as #2 on Amazon.com’s humor best-seller list and #65 on its overall bestseller list.
The cherry on top: a shout out on New York Magazine’s coveted Approval Matrix (top left corner).

Founded by a group of young filmmakers, philanthropists, and entrepreneurs, Cinereach is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering socially relevant film. The organization makes grants to media initiatives such as the Reach Film Fellowship, which supports talented young filmmakers creating meaningful media with artistic merit.
Cinereach, a nonprofit that champions socially relevant films, wanted to boost the number of entries for its Reach Film Fellowship, a prestigious six-month program that pairs young filmmakers with grants, resources, and industry mentors.
The ideal applicant would be a recent film school grad with an interest in social causes. To get the word out to this narrow niche, PKPR developed a finely tuned social media campaign that used Twitter, Facebook, blog, and online outreach to connect with film students, social activists, and influencers in the independent film world. The results: applications for this year’s Fellowship program increased by over 100%.
PKPR’s campaign resulted in tweets from some of the most widely followed independent film voices on Twitter, including Filmmaker Magazine editor Scott Macauley, indie film guru Ted Hope, The Independent Magazine, DocuGirl, and Docs Interactive.
On Facebook, the call for applications was posted by such targeted groups as Emerson College, Future Filmmakers, Student Filmmakers, and Independent Short Filmmaking. Film schools around the country also shared the news via e-blasts and bulletin boards, including NYU, Brown, and UNC.
Meanwhile, PKPR’s blog outreach led to posts on such prominent sites as Documentary.org, the site of the International Documentary Association; Working Films; Social Edge, the Skoll Foundation’s social entrepreneur networking site, and the School of Visual Arts.

The Imagine Festival of Arts, Issues & Ideas was an artistic antidote to the 2004 Republican Convention. Through vigilance and skillful messaging, PKPR broke through the cacophony of politicians and protesters, and gave artists a voice in the national dialogue.
Throughout the campaign, PKPR drove home the Festival’s core principle: art is vital to civic discourse. We highlighted the big picture early and often – at a kick-off press conference and then a media preview party, giving reporters access to artists and organizers. Once the Festival swung into gear, we managed publicity for the more than 200 events at 75 venues across the city, including a 4-mile long unemployment line of New Yorkers waving pink slips.
We placed five articles in the Wall Street Journal, ten in the NY Times, five in AP, and a 4-part series in the LA Times, and secured guest spots for organizers and artists on outlets from CNN and NY1 to Air America, and WNYC. Most importantly, we helped the Festival attract the attention – and exert the influence – it deserved. Most events were near-capacity, sold-out, or standing-room only
